The Tortuguero National Park is without a doubt a place that you can’t miss if you go to Costa Rica, and is also one of the most popular eco-touristic destinations of the country. It is nature in its pure state. Its biodiversity is spectacular and it’s one of the reasons why the park is known internationally. The natural rivers, the watercourses, the beaches, the lakes or the tropical forests leave anyone  breathless, but its fauna is not missed either by anyone. Among tropical birds, fishes, alligators, monkeys, sloths and even jaguars, there are animals that rise above the rest: the leatherback sea turtle and the green turtles. These reptiles are famous by the “spawning”, the moment when the turtles place their eggs. This occurs between the months of July and October and what makes this moment special and magical is that thousands of turtles travel many kilometers to return to where they were born and place their eggs. It is something really spectacular to see, and as a tourist you have to respect the natural cycle of the turtles without interfering.
To visit Tortuguero, you can’t arrive with a car, although you can approach it and then rent a taxiboat. If you want to spend a few days in the area the best thing to do is to book a hotel that connects with the beach. This way you can go walking to the town without depending on taxiboats,. And if you wake up early you can visit the turtles without paying a guide to take you on a night excursion. During the night the turtles place their eggs and it is completely prohibited to go to the beach without a guide. The turtles are really protected. Also, it is convenient to be vaccinated, and to have at hand a repellent for tropical mosquitoes, and to wear appropriate clothes for the rain. The park is in one of the most humid places of the country and tends to rain a lot. If you have all this with you, the only thing left is to set up your camera, have your open you eyes wide and enjoy your visit to the park.
