The Chain Bridge is the oldest suspension bridge of Budapest and connects the two parts of the city, Buda and Pest. The bridge passes over the Danube and it’s certainly one of the emblems of the city and the scene of thousands of photographs. From the bridge there are good views of the Danube and the whole city in general and walking across it is almost mandatory. It is visible from many points of the estuary and it'slocated in one of the most popular tourist spots in the city. On daylight it’s charming but if you have the chance, it’s also worth crossing at night and watching the lit up bridge assemble the two parts of the city.
The construction of this bridge changed the dynamics of Buda and Pest as before, these two ancient cities were separated by a temporary bridge that was installed during the warm months. When winter came, to prevent that the increased flow destroyed the bridge, they retreated it. So during the winter months Buda and Pest were isolated from each other. The structure of the existing bridge it’s not the original one, because during the World War II it was destroyed by the German army. The remains are exposed in the Budapest Transport Museum. As a curiosity, on holidays it becomes a pedestrian bridge.
