The Castel de Sant’Angelo is a huge castle located near the Vatican city. It is also located near the shore of the Tiber river and its outdor structure is quiet stunning due to its rounded shape. This castle was built with the intention to be a mausoleum for the Adriano emperor and his family. Some years after, this castle became a militar building which has served as a shelter for some popes during sieges in the city. Its name comes from a vision which Papa Gregorio I had about one angel which appeared on the top of the castle, and that’s why there is a statue of an angel there nowadays. In the cells of this castle some historical figures have been locked in and its visit is quiet interesting. You can visit the rooms, the cells, the ashes room and admire the frescoes. From the terrace you can admire views to the city and the Vatican. To arrive to the castle you just have to cross the bridge of Sant’Angelo, which is decorated with various angel scultures.
