Herculaneum excavation sites are a state-owned property archaeological area, also UNESCO world heritage site since 1997. It was an ancient Roman town destroyed by the volcanic flows. Nowadays you can visit its ruins, but actually, it is one of the few ancient cities very well preserved which you can see, almost in its original splendour, together with Pompeii, Stabiae, Oplontis or Boscoreale.
