Hutongs are traditional neighborhoods and old downtowns in China's cities. There are less of them because most cities are changing them for modern architecture buildings far from Chinese style. Still, in Beijing there are several historical areas and hundred-year-old buildings. Hutongs in the capital are filled with traditional homes, made by several rooms around a square yard. Most of them don't have a bathroom so people still use common ones. This is the real Beijing and it's worth to wander around its alleys to see the locals lifestyle: kids running around, elder ones in pyjamas, neighbors gathering to play cards in yards or to do the laundry in common areas...!
The most famous Hutongs in Beijing are Jinsitaothe ones between Drum Tower and Shichahai lake, Dashilan street or Qianmen ones.
