This is Beijing's most important monument and a must see. The Forbidden City was home to China's emperors for almost five centuries, from the Ming to the Quing dinasties, and is a Wolrd Heritage since 1987. It's the biggest wooden facility in the world and is made up by many palaces with a surface of over 70,000 sqm! In ancient times they were only for the court and direct subjects, hence its name. It's for all audience since 1949. Most of the complex is open for visit today, from yards to the most private rooms: concubines ones, Eunuch's court, etc...The whole place is filled with sculptures such as the roof guardians, standing at the corners of each roof, or Chinese lions welcoming the hallway to each pavilion.
As a curiosity, the Forbidden City is based in odd numbers' harmony, specially 9. There are 9.999 rooms and each door has 81 thumbtacks. It's an amazing complex and worth dedicating a few hours to take it all in.
