The Gran Canaria island is one of the 7 islands of the Canarian Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. This group of islands form the Autonomous community of Canarias in Spain and it is one of the main touristic destinations of the country. Gran Canaria is one of the most populated islands and it receives many visitors, most of them Europeans who come to enjoy the sun and amazing beaches in the shore of the volcano where the... island was born. Gran Canaria shows off of one of the most beautiful landscapes of the country, with tropical ones but many natural wonders, more than 60 km of beaches of golden sand, full of dunes and surfers. If you like to discover the essence of every place, in Gran Canaria you will be able to do it visiting charming villages stucked in past which still preserve many of the main ancient traditions. With all of this, it is normal that the island was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Language

In the Canarian Islands the official language is the Spanish. Despite it is nearer Africa, Gran Canaria preserves the language of its country with some variations, words and expressions very autochthonous.

Weather

Gran Canaria, same than the other islands of the Canarian Islands, is well known for having a warm-template weather during the whole year, also known as the “endless Spring”: Summers are hot and Winters soft and warm. But Gran Canaria has a variety of subclimates due to the different altitudes in different zones of the island. This climatic changes are making very different landscapes depending on the area of the island and that’s why Gran Canaria is known as the “thumbnail continent” , thanks to its diversity. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, its capital, is considered the city with the best weather in the world by many climate studies.

Money

EURO (€). Gran Canaria belongs to Spain so the official currency is the euro. Due to the big influence of the tourists, the island is very well prepared with cash converters and exchange offices everywhere.

When to go

Thanks to its amazing weather, any moment of the year is a proper moment to visit it. In ths winter it is a bit cooler than the rest of the year, but nothing compared to “the real winter” in other parts of Spain. For this reason, the months of December to February are considered the high season, same than from June to August. So, if you want to come when there is less people and find the best prices, come between March and June.

Days

6 days. It is recommended to spend 6 days, some in the coast and some in the interior of the island, which is the best combination to discover the island and its landscape contrasts. If you can, spend some time in the small villages and meet local people.

Store Hours

In Gran Canaria most of the shops open from 10h to 20:30h with a break in the midday to eat. Some of the commercial centres open until 22h, and all of them close on Sundays and public holidays.
